This article covers adding majors to both the Majors and Major Lists. Since most additions to majors will be manual, that process is covered in this article. For instructions on importing majors, please see Importing Majors

Introduction

Setting up your Majors (Application | Majors) is a critical component in managing your online applications. You can create majors in Majors either manually or via import (see instructions).

Majors and Major Lists manage what applicants select as their intended major, program of study, or area of interest at your institution. Note: if you need a refresher, please review the Majors vs. Major Lists article.

Important Notes:

  • In order for a major to be viewable to an applicant, it must be in a Major List. That Major List must also be connected to either the Term or hard-coded as the major field.
  • Majors must be set up before Majors Lists can be created. It is a best practice to create Major Lists before Terms, since you will select Major Lists to associate with each term.

You can change the number of majors that display on each page in the Majors section of CrossConnect, by selecting either 10, 25, 50, 75, or 100 from the Majors Per Page dropdown list (the default is 25).

To find a particular major, type the major name (or part of the major name) into the search box at the top of the screen

Adding majors to Majors (manually)

Application | Majors

  1. Add a New Major - Click the + New Major button () at the top of the screen
  2. Give the Major a Name - Type the Name for your new major. This is an external label and is what the applicant sees on the application (this is a required field). There are no character limits on the length of the major name and html friendly special characters are allowed
  3. Give the Major a Code - Type the Code for your new major. This is an internal label and is what populates to your download files when you download the application data (this is a required field). There are no character limits on the length of the major code and html friendly special characters are allowed.
    1. Note: Since the system looks at both the major Name and Code, you may use the same code for
different names, if you wish—ex: Major name of “Pre-Law” and code of “123PreProfess” as well as a major name of “Pre-Med” and the same code of “123PreProfess”
  4. Save the Major - Click the Save button () to save your new major

Note: If you don’t want to save the major after all, you can click the Cancel button () to remove it

Adding majors to Major Lists

Application | Major Lists

  1. Select the Major List - Click on the Major List you want to add majors to

  2. Add Majors to the List - To add a major from the Available Majors list into your Major List’s Included Majors, click the Add icon () next to the majors you want to add

Note: Available Majors are populated from Majors. Those majors with an Add icon () next to them are majors that are not yet included in your current Major List.

  1. Save the Major List - Once you have all the majors added to your Included Majors that you want in your current Major List, click the Save button ()at the top of the screen to save your changes.
