2FA: Reset Authentication Key
If you have a new phone or have experienced some 2FA issues, you might have your authentication key reset. Please see below for steps to take for that & how to identify if it's happened to you. If these don't work to solve your issue, please email me at cfnc-campus@northcarolina.edu. Thanks!
#1 - What does it mean that the Authentication Key has been reset?
Each user account in CrossConnect has an Authentication Key connected to their account. This key is unique to that user. Whenever you authorize your authentication app, you scan a QR code, which has that key embedded in the picture. That key is linked to the authentication app. You confirm that the connect is "good" by providing the 6-digit code as verification on your QR screen.
So... resetting the Authentication Key means that you have been given a new key.
- Any authentication apps that were associated with that key will not work anymore
- You must re-authorize the authentication app with your new key
#2 - How do you tell if you need to re-authorize the authetication app
The login screen will be different. On the CrossConnect login screen, you'll add your email address and password. Then you'll click "Sign In." The next page will show one of two screens:
| Your authentication code should work | You need to re-authorize |
#3 - How do you reauthorize your authentication app?
First, you'll need to delete the previous authorization. Do not delete the authentication app itself. Instead, delete the authorization (account) from the app. See the example below from the Microsoft Authenticator:
1. In the authenticator app, click on the name of the authentication, it should say something like "CrossConnect" or "CFNC CrossConnect"
2. You should see a screen that says "Ways to sign in or verify" with the six digit password code underneath that. In the upper right of the screen, click the gear icon.
3. Click the "Remove Account"
Second, once that is removed, you'll be able to authorize the new QR code on your screen.
